The Tribeca Film Festival, founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2002, has announced it will return with film screening in 2021 in outdoor venues across New York City.
The initiative for the festival when it first started was to revitalize lower Manhattan post 9/11. In the 19 years it has existed, it hosts about 600 screenings every year, with an audience averaging 150,000 spectators. Some of the most remarkable titles that premiered in the festival are The Avengers and Shrek.
The plan for this year, in order to adjust for the safety protocols in the era of COVID-19, is to hold screenings in outdoor venues. Some of the spaces already scheduled for the event are The Empire Outlets (Staten Island), MetroTech Commons (Brooklyn), Brookfield Place, The Pier 57 Rooftop, The Battery, and Hudson Yards (Manhattan). Instead of April, in 2021 the festival happens from June 9 through June 20.
“The Tribeca Film Festival was born out of our mission to bring people together in the aftermath of 9/11. We’re still doing it,” said De Niro in a statement on the Tribeca Film Festival website. “And as New York emerges from the shadow of COVID-19, it seems just right to bring people together again in-person for our 20th anniversary festival.”
More information on film schedules and safety protocols will be available in the upcoming weeks on their website.
