On April 13, the community newspaper Brooklyn Paper announced firsthand the return of Mermaid Parade, which takes place every year in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
According to the website coneyisland.com, the objective of the festival, which is one of the most anticipated festivals of the summer season in the city, is to celebrate maritime figures and mythological figures, to exalt the entrepreneurial spirit of the artists participating in the parade, and to vitalize the region between Neptune and Mermaid avenues on Coney Island.
Last year, like many others, the event took place online, due to the crisis of the coronavirus. With the absence of the Coney Island parade and theme park, Coney Island establishments, along with the park, are estimated to have suffered a loss of approximately $ 100 million.
Event organizer Dick Zigun, who is part of Coney Island USA, told Brooklyn Paper that they are watching for updates to the COVID protocols in the city in order to adjust the parade to take place in person in 2021.
“We need to pay attention to what everyone is paying attention to, which is the rate of infection decreasing and the rate of vaccination increasing,” Zigun told the newspaper.
The starting date of the event would be June 9, ahead of the summer solstice. As the organizers didn’t arrange before other events with the NYPD, the New York police force, responsible for issuing permits for events, a confirmation date for the event in 2021 is still pending.
